FAQs

Q. What is the difference between soap and shampoo bars?
A. The bar shape makes them look similar, but in terms of ingredients and efficaciousness, they couldn’t be more different. Soap is classed as a surfactant, and it’s fine for your body. But with a pH 8-12 (alkaline), it’s far too alkaline for hair and it can lead to hair abrasion and damage. That’s why we use mild, creamy, plant-derived, biodegradable cleansing agents in our shampoo bars, which have a pH 6-6.5 (acidic), a perfect acidity level for hair.

“Alkaline pH may increase the negative electrical charge of the hair fiber surface and, therefore, increase friction between the fibers. This may lead to cuticle damage and fiber breakage. It is a reality and not a myth that lower pH of shampoos may cause less frizzing for generating less negative static electricity on the fiber surface” – International Journal of Trichology . 2014 Jul-Sep; 6(3): 95–99.

Q. How can you tell if a shampoo bar is not soap?
A. The ingredients and formulation! The proportions of base oil and butter are different in both kinds of bar, with shampoo bars having more “hair-friendly ingredients.” Shampoo bars are usually a mild detergent that create bubbly lather.

If the ingredient list contains the word “saponised” or includes “sodium hydroxide,” then it’s soap: Do Not Use It On Your Hair!

Q. How do I use GOOD CUBE Conditioning Shampoo Bars?
A. It’s simple! Just wet your hair, strike the dry bar down its full length about 4 - 6 times (fewer if bar is wet), massage evenly to create lather, and leave it on 3-4 mins before rinsing.

To prolong your bar’s life, keep it dry between uses.

Q. How many washes do I get out of a GOOD CUBE Conditioning Shampoo Bar?
A. Each 120g cube lasts for over 100 washes for medium length hair (based on keeping the bar well drained and dry between washes).

Q. Why do GOOD CUBE Bars last so long?
A. GOOD CUBE shampoo and conditioner bars last so long because they are extruded under high pressure. This squeezes out all the air so the ingredients become very dense and concentrated. Most other bars on the market use a “melt and pour” manufacturing method which traps a lot of air and the bars tend to melt in the bathroom environment.

Q. How do you calculate how many plastic bottles are saved from entering the environment by using shampoo bars?
A. The Consumer New Zealand report on shampoo bars states that an average user gets 25 washes from a 250ml bottle of shampoo. We also estimate a similar calculation for conditioner use.

This means for every 120g Good Cube you should get at least 100 washes and every cube saves 8 x 250ml plastic bottles from entering the environment.

Q. Why is there some variability in the bars?
A. Our bars are hand batched and we use a lot of natural oils and actives. As we purchase fresh ingredients for each batch, there can be some variability with look and feel, but not performance. This is because the colour, texture, and aroma of plants varies from season to season.

Imperfect = Real

Little coconut grains may appear throughout some bars but not in others. This is because some coconut grains don’t completely dissolve. At times, your bar may also show cracking. This can be caused by the bar not being well drained between washes, causing swelling and cracking.

If the bar shows excess cracking, place in the GOOD CUBE hemp pouch. Use the bar while inside the pouch, and it doubles as an exfoliator. Also, it is a great way to get every last use from those little bits that would otherwise go to waste.

Q. What is the GOOD CUBE 5 in 1 Shampoo Conditioning Bar? (the mother of all multi-taskers)
A. This gentle cleansing and conditioning all-in-one “Daily Groomer” is rich in soothing Kumerahou, nutrient-dense Spirulina, and detoxifying Green Clay. It’s the ideal bar for minimalists, people on the move, and people who like to save time, it serves as a:

  1. Shampoo
  2. Conditioner
  3. Face Wash
  4. Shaving lather
  5. Body wash

Q. Is it safe to use the shampoo and conditioner bar on coloured hair?
A. Yes! Our shampoo and conditioning bars do not strip hair the way surfactant-heavy liquid shampoos do. They’re formulated with gently effective cleansing ingredients that contain a higher percentage of oils and butters to give your colour-treated hair a boost of moisture and shine.

Q. Why do you use these particular ingredients in your bars?
A. Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate (SCI) is an important surfactant ingredient in our mild cleansing bars. In vitro and in vivo studies have demonstrated that SCI is mild and less damaging to the skin barrier than soaps and other surfactants. This results in a lower pH product that is more suitable for the smoothing the hair cuticle and protecting the acid mantle balance of the skin: it’s gentle on the scalp.

HERE’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SLS & SLSA (because they sound the same)

WE CHOOSE TO USE THIS INGREDIENT BECAUSE…

Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate (SLSA) is a mild surfactant with excellent foam and viscosity building properties. It’s a great alternative to soap when sensitivity is a concern.

SLSA is naturally derived from Coconut Oils and sometimes blended with sustainably sourced RSPO palm oil. It conforms to Ecocert’s natural and organic cosmetic standard and is 100% of natural origin.

“LATHANOL LAL contains from 0 to 39% palm derived fatty alcohol, depending on the mix of coconut or palm used to make the fatty alcohol raw material” – statement from the supplier of SLSA (brand name LATHANOL LAL)

SLSA offers rich lather without the irritation potential of some other foam-building surfactants. Due to its large molecular size, it doesn’t penetrate the skin or mucous membranes, making it an ideal choice for gentle cleansing systems.

SLSA is a great alternative to Sodium Lauryl Sulfate.

WE CHOOSE NOT TO USE THIS INGREDIENT BECAUSE……

Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLS) is a low-cost synthetic, small molecule cleansing agent. It is capable of penetrating the skin, which can increase the occurrence of skin irritation.

Q. Is SLSA bad for hair?
A. No! SLSA is derived from coconut oils. It’s a safe, skin-friendly surfactant for hair and skin, with good mild cleansing properties that gently remove oils and bacteria.

Q. How is our shampoo and conditioner bar doing good for New Zealand coastlines?
A. Because GOOD CUBE conditions as well as shampoos, every GOOD CUBE bar prevents 8 plastic 250ml bottles from polluting our environment. Our shampoo bars are made with biodegradable ingredients and packaged in compostable materials, so they leave no trace (except, of course, your cleansed, nourished, energised hair).

Q. Why is GOOD CUBE extruded over the ditch?
A. GOOD CUBE is a well-established 100% kiwi owned, family business.

We develop all our products here, but the squishing together of our New Zealand Botanicals and other natural ingredients is done across the ditch in Australia.

They are one step ahead of us in the technology to extrude the GOOD CUBE concentrate to get create such a long lasting bar.
